Hello Jon: I would like to know if the new Dana's are going to be 8 ohm's? I was considering the 630 and although this speaker is considered a value. I would need to purchase a seperate amp, which would of course negate that value. The Manufacturer stated my 8 ohm reciever can play speakers that are 6 ohms but warned me that 4 ohms might damage the unit, and of course not cover it under warranty!

Yes, the new Danas will nearly be nominal 8 ohm loudspeakers, including the dual-drivered models like centers and towers. Really special stuff too, if I can add that. This is going to be a very fun new line to work with.

There is an excellent chance, and that design work is going forward as I write this. Let me offer some background on the last eighteen months of thinking and planning as it concerns Dana.

The next Dana 600 series to appear were planned to do many things, starting with replacing the original Dana 630 with an all-new Dana 630i, which is sized at roughly eight liters. The original Dana 660 center becomes the 630i's matched, dual-woofer mate, the new Dana 630iLCR. Both are based on ultra-sophisticated new 5.25" midwoofers and matching 25mm dome tweeters.

The original Dana series had no 6.5" model, so we're going to reserve the 40 designator for all new models using 6.5" midwoofers. Therefore the new 640i will be the 630i's bigger brother and will carry a 6.5" bass driver. It'll be the line's first full-sized stand monitor at roughly eighteen liters.

From this we can more easily extrapolate the upcoming 900 series, which is planned and under development. The 930i will also consist of a premium 5.25" midwoofer, but this time joined by a upgraded dome tweeter. A 940i will join the 900 series line and will use the same tweeter as all 900 series products, but with a 6.5" midwoofer. There may not be a new 980 double woofer two-way, but there are at least a pair of Dana 900 series tower three-ways in planning.

(Not so incidentally, we're an ISO 9001-level furniture source and we take quality seriously. Our organization builds nothing but premium product, and we use no third world or inexperienced staff or facilities, which apparently some others do with predictable results. Dana finishes are glass-flat, and are entirely competitive with anything in a matte finish currently out there. The underlying cabinets are precision mill-cut and all hardware is top-shelf in the class. Dana drivers even typically group to within a half decibel tolerance. Our electronics are assembled on glass-epoxy boards and we use only the industry-standard's top grades for passive components.)

From this point forward we plan to launch not less than a dozen new models, with sixteen being currently on radar. I cannot say when (or even guarantee if) all of these launch, but the plan is to build an entire range of Dana products across at least three product families and possibly four.

I'm hesitant to put all this out there because we all know how the best laid plans go, but I can say that we're prepared from the design side, all technologies are in place, we're well-sourced, and we're in production. Unless Washington or Wall Street can figure out a new way to reach into our pockets and flip us over one more time, 2010 could be the year we catch up on a lot of product plans incubating since 2008.

Poal Rossing knows how to make a speaker! Designing speakers for B&W as well as a few other high end companies helps. His use of quality drivers "ScanSpeak" to name one and his experience came to me as no surprise, when the judges prefered the Dana 630 over the B&W, during Craigsubs bookshelf speaker shootout! Using a 5.25 driver in place of a 6.5 is not necessarily a bad thing, especially considering certain types of distortion that might hinder the design goal. The quality side of me is interested in the new Dana design and the value side has me leaning towards the Arx. I love a full sounding speaker with the proper bass which make choosing between the 2 Lines hard! The best balance is getting the best sound I can afford. It will help to hear them both first before making a final decision.
