Dana 640i

Dana 640i stand monitor loudspeaker

Serious performance for much less than expected

The new Dana 640i is part of the second generation of precision Dana loudspeakers and the first Dana 600-Series stand monitor with a large, 165mm / 6.5" midwoofer. The all-new 640i's long-throw midwoofer is performance-tuned in a classic bass reflex alignment and its 25mm / 1" soft dome tweeter perfectly compliments it (and other Dana models) through a precision dividing network. Both Dana 640i drivers use special technologies that truly set them apart from anything we're aware of in Dana's price class. Each of the two drivers has a frequency response at least a full octave beyond expected standards for the class, along with the proportionally lower distortion that only these technologies can provide. Dana's special combination of very high driver linearity is a first for such affordable models.

Ultra-high resolution from an affordable, premium Internet-direct loudspeaker

Costing less than speakers an entire performance class under them, the new Dana 640i are mirror imaged and ship in matched pairs. The 640i are finished in genuine European matte-finished, filled-grain cherry and exceed the usual quality of the reference loudspeaker class for anywhere near their cost.

Exclusive features

  • Very low distortion driver motors for both tweeter and midwoofer give the 640i superlative musical detail
  • Tweeter response to beyond 40kHz for excellent phase response in the audible band
  • Raw papyrus midwoofer cones and ultra-linear suspensions along with extremely low inductance motors give the 640i's midwoofers a raw response to 10kHz
  • Cast alloy midwoofer basket is completely ventilated for excellent linearity and power handling
  • Bass reflex enclosure type, tuned for best bass control without the bass "lift" common to so many speakers
  • Heavy, braced, damped cabinet finished in genuine polished cherry veneer
  • Rear ported. Matched, mirror-imaged black knit grilles are removable. Stainless hardware. Single-pair input terminals in heavy gold plating

The new Dana 640i is a dramatic entry into the very high value loudspeaker category - we challenge you to find sound like this anywhere. With The Audio Insider, you'll save substantially - the quality and sound of the Dana 640i is rarely available for under $2000 the pair. Compare them to any premium stand monitor you choose.

Dana's 25mm dome tweeter has a usable response to nearly 40kHz.

Dana's very high performance midwoofers have less motor distortion than anything in Dana's class.

Note the flat rear suspension and completely ventilated voice coil.

Dana technology

Tweeter

All Dana 600i-Series main speakers (the "i" designates "Improved" in this, the second generation of Dana loudspeakers) use a very high performance 25mm soft dome tweeter. This special dome tweeter has response to beyond 40kHz, and a remarkably flat, non-reactive impedance magnitude for low distortion. These characteristics are remarkable and truly transform the driver ... and only Dana has them in its price class. The Audio Insider selected this tweeter for these attributes and we believe they make this device unique to the Dana 600i-series class - you won't find this level of performance at this price elsewhere.

Dana's tweeter includes a European silk dome, special low-inductance motor with copper plating for very low distortion and very wide bandwidth, a high-energy motor, tuned rear chamber, special low-distortion suspension, and optimized dispersion. As the diret result, all Dana speakers have high frequencies that are neutral, open, spacious, and relaxed-sounding. The 25mm Dana dome tweeter also has high power handling, wide dynamic range, and excellent dispersion, features rarely found at Dana's low price.

Midbass / Woofers

Dana also uses special highly upgraded midbass and bass drivers for best performance and acoustic match. Each model has a hard-struck raw papyrus curvilinear cone balanced in a linear, low loss, low distortion suspension using a low-loss front edge suspension and a large flat rear spider. Frames are cast alloy, and feature a completely ventilated motor, both under the suspension and through the pole piece. Special copper shorting devices in the Dana motor give Dana midbass and bass drivers literally the lowest magnetic distortion we've seen in 30 years, and this excellence reveals itself in Dana's remarkable new sound.

Like all speaker models in the premium category at The Audio Insider, Dana speakers have a wonderful balance of neutral response, wide bandwidth, and low distortion, and Dana models uniquely have a high degree of "downward dynamic range" or the ability to mine the recording for previously unheard information. All models are precision-tuned bass reflex alignments for the best bass possible.

Crossover networks

As a premium product from a reputable maker and brand, Dana models all come with highly optimized internal dividing networks and filters, each CAD-developed and tuned by ear with care and expertise. Danas voicing is musical and articulate, and does wonders for either music or home theater program material. High-grade polypropylene capacitors, non-inductive resistors, and low loss inductors complete each circuit.

Cabinets

A great European-style loudspeaker brand is certain to include impeccable sonics, but Dana includes equally impressive furniture-grade cabinetry in the tradition of the best Danish-modern style. All cabinets are genuine hardwood veneer and all panels are milled to final tolerance by computer-controlled machines - hand-cutting cannot ensure Dana's perfect fit, finish, and unit-to-unit consistency. Enclosures are internally braced for strength and damped with up to three kinds of internal damping for sonic inertness. Final finishing involves a filled-grain, glass-flat surface polished to a medium lustre for lasting value and a look as harmonious in your decor as Dana sound is to your ears.

"Einsteinjb" reviews the Dana 640i in the AVS forum

"The 640is give my goosebumps goosebumps. I've had several moments where I found myself frozen, forgetting to breathe, eyes closed, mouth hanging open, completely involved in the music. It's like being taken to a higher center of consciousness, if that means anything to anyone (I'm sure the true music lovers here understand that). After all, we don't really want to hear speakers at all, do we? We want to hear music, or better yet, we want to be transported out of our listening room and dropped right in the room with the band, or right in the front row in front of the stage. As a lifelong musician and live sound engineer who mixes real bands (some of them truly excellent) for a living, I'm quite literally in that position all the time. My goal is always to more and more closely duplicate that REAL live experience in my room -- not necessarily in volume (though it's good to know I have the headroom to achieve clean concert levels if I wanted to) but in the emotional involvement of real live music.

"I'm keeping these. You're gonna have to pry them from my cold, dead fingers...Crossed over to my sub at 70 Hz, these truly sound like floorstanding speakers. There is NO hole whatsoever in the response -- it just stays rock solid all the way down...Talk about the Magic! Holy shnikes. They just utterly disappear -- with my eyes closed I really don't hear exactly where the speakers are. I just hear music, all OVER the place.

"The biggest thing for me is the shocking realism and detail (or as Jon puts it, the resolution), combined with the fantastic bass response and clarity...On the 640is, I go, "Holy crap, I'm THERE! There's the acoustic bass, there's the piano, there's the singers, a guitar, a cello, and all the space between them..." No speakers, just music...the 640is give you the MUSIC.

"As for the bass response, I'm floored by it. These are NOT boom boxes (and I wouldn't like it if they were)! By bass response, I don't mean they'll rattle your windows and disturb the neighbors. I mean, there's DEPTH, and the resolution these midwoofers produce is awesome...I'm not sure I've ever heard speakers more accurately reproduce an acoustic bass before."

These are just stunning speakers. Right out of the box they sounded exceptionally clear and precise, especially in the mid-range. They also seem to be more efficient than their ratings would suggest.
