Tweeters

Regardless of price, all multi-way Swan Active Desktop speakers use high performance soft dome tweeters with Neodymium motors. The top T200b employs 28mm Danish-style tweeters with German-made silk domes, while the M200 series models and D1080 series models feature 25mm soft fabric tweeters. Even the economical M10 and D1010IV have 20mm soft dome tweeters. Midbass / Woofers

Excluding the Swan M10, D1010IV and all fullrange models such as the H2, nearly all Swan Active Desktop loudspeakers use beefy 5.25" woofers - unlike competitors, Swan doesn't use 3", 4", or even 4.5" "woofers" in anything except the very smallest models or in satellite speakers supported by bass systems. Cabinets

The Swan M-50 is one of the best active desk top 2.1 speaker systems available at this price. The finish is very attractive, and the sound is absolutely remarkable.When they are connected to the Fiio E-17 or the Grant dac-11 the music becomes spacious, with excellent bass. Excellent near-field speakers, these are turning out to be everything I wanted: a nice, attractive 2.1 set, with good shielding (i.e no GSM hum when my iPhone is near), an outboard volume control, and above all, excellent sound. First off, would I recommend this speaker system? ABSOLUTELY. MY SETUP: Xonar Essence STX (EQ set to flat with no other enhancements) Speakers located on the sides of my monitor, sitting on MoPads. Sub located under the desk GENERAL IMPRESSIONS OF THE SOUND: Coming from a 5.1 Logitech speaker system, the first thing I noticed was the amazing clarity and detail of these speakers. The highs are crystal clear and the mids are deep, yet well balanced; never. The highs are very present, but never screechy. I found it hard to conceive, when I first read the reviews for this system, that people were hearing sounds coming from these speakers that they’ve never heard before. I can attest that those people were telling the truth! Listening to classical music, I can hear not only noticeably more detail and accuracy, but actual instruments I never heard when using the Logitech system. I can ever hear singers inhaling air before singing. The subwoofer is simply astounding. It’s a modest 6.5” driver (the same as the sub I had with the Logitech system), but the bass it puts out is, quite frankly, amazing. I have it set to about 30% and I can feel the bass hits through the far wall in my room while in the adjacent room. It can go very deep, but it isn’t boomy or muddy at all; it’s very controlled. I’m sure if I set it to 100%, my parents would be upset, and they’re on the other side of the house. In near field listening, this system can definitely play loud enough to be uncomfortable when needed to. THE SUBWOOFER: The heatsink on the back of the sub does get warm to the touch, but not hot enough to burn my hand. Yes, the controller for the subwoofer is located on the back of the subwoofer itself, not on the control dial that goes on your desk. Is this a bad thing? In my opinion, no. When I first set up the system, it took a little time to find my sweet spot for the sub. Once I found it, I’ve haven’t had the need to crawl under my desk to adjust it again. It is surprising heavy for its compact size. Too a little muscle to lift it out of the box. AESTHETICS AND PACKAGING: I’m sure I’m not the only one that loved that wood finish at first sight. It’s beautiful. The glossy piano black finish adds a nice accent. The system comes double boxed – the system is pack in a nice cardboard box with a corrugated cardboard outer box. The speakers are housed a fitted styrofoam, with no play/space whatsoever. I couldn’t feel any movement from inside the box when I was moving it around. For Essence STX owners: you’ll need to buy a 3.5mm stereo to male RCA cable (or just use the adapter that comes with the STX card itself). The system only comes with a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable to hook into your soundcard. QUALMS: I do have a few criticisms with this system, but they’re more along the lines of nitpicking. The desktop controller, while very slick, isn’t by any means perfect. The dial itself gives no indication at all as to how loud the speakers are set. The only way you’ll know is if you play something back. So you’ll often times find yourself lowering the volume way low whenever you unmute the system just to prevent a possible blast of sound from coming out of the speakers. It does have a nice weight to it (along with a non-slip finish on the bottom), so it won’t be slipping around when you’re adjusting the volume. There is a slight hiss that comes out of the tweeters when nothing is being played back. It is by no means intrusive, in my opinion, and doesn’t disturb my sleep at all. I literally need to place my ear about an inch from the tweeters to hear it. Would I buy this system again. DEFINITELY! I can’t recommend it enough. Rating: [5 of 5 Stars!]

I have had my M50W's for a few months now, and I love them. I was waffling between the M10's and these, and I must say I am glad I made the step up to the bigger system. Don't get me wrong, the M10's are incredible even before you consider the price and small size, I just appreciate the extra power. (I have a couple of friends with M10's) The other feature that I really appreciate is the remote volume knob, which makes it much more convenient to adjust the system volume than having the knob on the woofer unit. For $279 ($313.90 shipped), you truly can't beat this quality. The sound is phenominal. I can't understand why anyone would consider something like a Logitech 2.1 system when this is out there. It truly must just be an issue of visibility. I replaced my Altec Lansing 2.1 FX4021 speakers with the M50W's and cannot believe that a few years ago, I paid a similar price for the Altecs. Really do love these speakers! They sounded a bit closed when I got them but they opened up as they broke in. Been happily listening to them for months now! My only real complaint is that the bass knob is hard to get adjusted /just/ right. Just a hair in either direction either leaves you with either not enough bass or really boomy bass. I'm not going to knock the speakers for this because it could very well be attributed to my room acoustics as easily. Overall, extremely happy! Would definitely recommend to friends! Having owned several large midrange speaker systems ranging from 150 to 1300 watts (klipsch, altec, harman...) I decided I wanted something powerful and fairly compact for gaming/movies/music on my PC. These speakers are quite powerful for their size and look amazing. My only complaint would be that while off (main power on, controller set to off) they have a noticeable hissing noise. The speakers are in my bedroom and I can clearly hear them at night. This probably wouldn't be an issue in an office, but for a high quality speaker system this is something that just shouldn't happen. Absolutely love these speakers. They sound amazing, and even at full volume they sound crystal clear. Also love the looks of them and the quality. The only reason I gave them a 4 star rating instead of 5, is they don't go as loud as I would have liked. But for a small room these are great! Also the bass from the sub is just right for the kind of music I listen to, which is mostly alternative, hard rock. I also game with these speakers and I have to say I can hear things in my games that I couldn't hear before. If you're looking to buy these speakers and you don't need them to go super loud, then definitely get them. Most people will probably find them more than loud enough for every day use. These speakers sound good and tight. BUT, the speakers have an annoying hum when they are turned on and idling. I would wish that the electronics were better designed so that the amplifiers would shut down when the remote control turns the speakers off or there is no media driving the speakers. I recently ordered Corsair's Sp 2500 2.1 PC desktop speaker set after, I thought, a thorough search for a quality set of speakers for our computer desk ... fortunately they were not in stock and I was offered a chance to cancel the order. That opportunity afforded me the chance to search a little more and that is when I came across the Audio Insider website and the wonderful Swan M50W. The Swan M50W is simply, by far and away, the best looking desktop speaker set that I'd come across. They are beautifully designed and look great. The sub, if you can afford the space on top of your desk, should go there for two reasons: (1) visual appeal, and (2) easy access to the power switch located in back on the left side. I have the sub located on the far right rear corner of our (5ft. wide) desk facing the left corner inside a (3ft. wide) shelving unit. This not only affords the low bass notes to bounce off something - which is important - but makes the power switch nice and accessible. How does the sub sound? Good. I've been transferring my CD collection to iTunes the past few days, and although I don't listen to my downtempo, dub, and drum-n-bass music as much as I used to, I have an extensive collection, and as a result, I can assure anyone considering the Swan M50W that the sub (75watts/38HZ-120HZ) is fine. It's probably not as loud as the Corsair Sp2500 (120watts/35HZ), but it goes almost as low. Bass tones below the mid 30's ... well, they're not there and you won't find a desktop unit that will provide them. I have the sub's volume control set at about 60-70% ... There doesn't seem to be much of a difference between when the sub comes into play at about 20% and 100%. How about the satellites? Very good :-) Opera music is my new passion, and the vocals and symphonic accompaniment coming through the Swan M50W's satellites are crystal clear. My wife enjoys Sarah Brightman and Josh Groban - two artists with wonderful voices accompanied by a variety of instruments - and this music afforded me another perspective for evaluating the satellites: again, superb sound. The Swan M50W's power (75w+18w+18W), while only about one half of the Corsair SP 2500, is more than adequate. I can easily turn the volume up to where it becomes uncomfortable. The volume control ... hmmm.... The volume control is an attractive addition to one's desktop, but - one can never be sure where the volume is set at ... for instance - what is half way to full volume? what is 1/8 volume? ... difficult to describe. What else? Here's some useful info I was not able to obtain anywhere until the M50W arrived at our home: speaker cables 80" ( just enough - phew !) ... 3.5mm cable 80" ... power cable 36" ... remote volume control 82" ... sub measures 11.25"wide, 12.9" deep, 9.9" high. PCHCables.com offers a nice 3.5mm cable for an affordable upgrade (gold plated connectors and heavy duty appearence). I ordered one of these before I learned about DATs. I've since added the HRT Music Streamer II to compliment the Swan unit. Swan, or any other maker of fine, quality audio components can't make up for the sound deficiencies inherent in compressed audio source material. At about $150, the HRT unit was a reasonable upgrade that compliments and enhances the sound quality produced by the M50W. Mediabridge Products offer nice cables to accommodate this set up. All in all, we now have an excellent sounding and very attractive set of audio components on our computer desk thanks to Swan Audio and The Audio Insider. Rating: [5 of 5 Stars!]

I bought this product a few months ago and I'm very pleased with the sound that comes out of these babies!. I've been using these speakers without a DAC and even then, the sound is very crystal clear. Long story short, these speakers are worth every single penny. If you're looking for a system with a subwoofer under the 400 dlls price range, these are it! These speakers deliver "amazing" sound for the price. Well worth the wait since these were on back order for a while. The clarity and sound from these sound like they came from a set that would have set me back at least $800 easily. I just received both the M50W and the M200MKIII's. I first set up the M50W. They sounded great. I listened to several genres of music and everything sounded sharp and clear. I then plugged in the M200MkIII and they blew me away. Every sound just popped out of the speakers. They both have excellent sound but I think I will keep the M200MkIIIs. Rating: [5 of 5 Stars!]
